Other than Christmas and birthdays, one of the most popular gift giving days is Valentine’s Day. However, unlike those other two occasions, gifts on Valentine’s Day tend to be romantic. So while electronics, household items, or clothes are prominent gifts at Christmas, they are less common for Valentine’s Day. Some of the most popular gifts for Valentine’s are flowers, jewelry, chocolates or candies, perfume or cologne, and personalized items.

The other major category of Valentine’s Day gifts is experiential. Experiential gifts offer the chance to build memories through activities. Eating at an expensive or romantic restaurant is one common way to celebrate. Increasingly, people are giving experiential gifts on Valentine’s Day to be enjoyed at a later date. This may be a spa treatment to be enjoyed individually, or it can be a shared cruise or wine tasting.

Besides Valentine’s Day gifts, the other important tradition is cards, or “valentines.” The Greeting Card Association states that approximately 190 million greeting cards are sent for Valentine’s Day each year in the United States. It is the second most popular holiday for sending cards, after Christmas. It is believed that one-quarter of the greeting cards sent throughout the year are sent for Valentine’s Day. A large number of those valentines, perhaps as many as half, are sent to parents or children.

Purchased greeting cards are not the only kinds of valentines, however. In schools, children will very often make their own valentines to give out to classmates and teachers. The past decade has also seen the rise of the electronic card on the Internet, including the electronic valentine. So are these e-cards replacing traditional paper greeting cards? The Greeting Card Association claims that few people are replacing greeting cards with e-cards, and that e-cards are mainly supplemental gifts to new recipients. There were about 15 million e-cards sent for Valentine’s Day in 2010. Overall, it is estimated that when all of the different types of cards (greeting, homemade, electronic) are combined, over one billion valentines are given in the U.S. each year.

As I read my daily newspaper and browse all the ads I am constantly surprised by how many jewelry and gifts stores seem to be running huge sales almost every week.  Some of these sales go as high as 80% off….wow.. .   I wonder what the people think who shop at these stores and pay full price because of some bad timing or a immediate need for a gift for an special occasion.

Shopping on the web can be a scary thing, so here are a few tips to help you while shopping online.  When I am looking at a site and trying to determine if I trust them and want to do business with them I always look for a few basic things.  First do they have a privacy policy?  All sites should have one and it should tell you how they use information that they collect on you during the shopping process.  Read this carefully if what they have written doesn’t make you comfortable then it’s time to leave and find another site.  One more comment about a company’s privacy policy.  I always like to read that in their policy that they do not sell or market my information to any outside companies.  (Privacy should always mean privacy).

Second thing I look for:  If I am buying products from them - do they have a customer feedback system or customer testimonials? This is a great way of seeing how they take care of their customers.  Its also a great way of getting some great gift ideas that other people have bought and their experience with the product.  When looking at testimonials you should look for dates. This will tell you if the testimonials are recent or old.  Its always good to see customer feedback that is both recent and consistent.

Last thing is site security.  This is hard becuase there are so many different ways to verify a site is secure.   While shopping on your site you should look for logos or site security information.  Many of these images can be clicked on for additional information about the sites security, but remember all of this can be faked.   So the most important thing to remember is that before enter your credit card information you should always look at the navigation bar of your browser and make sure the the URL of the Site has changed from http://www.silverminegifts.com to https://www.silverminegifts.com/….ect    The ”https:” means that the page you are on is secure and encrypted.   There is always more to talk about on this subject but there is never enough time.
